String Bean Tofu – An Easy and Frugal Recipe

String Bean Tofu is one of my favorite meals to make and to eat. It’s simple, quick, and delicious. AND the ingredients are super cheap so it’s budget-friendly!

I’m also sharing how I get super crispy tofu!

String Bean Tofu

This recipe makes about two servings

Ingredients

  • ⅓ brick of firm tofu
  • Sprinkle of flour
  • 1 tablespoon virgin unrefined coconut oil or other healthy oil
  • 1 small to medium onion sliced
  • 3-4 cloves garlic roughly chopped
  • 2 cups of string beans cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 2-3 tablespoons soy sauce (to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon molasses or honey
  • ¼ cup of water
  • Sea salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Slice tofu into ¼-inch slices and place between 2 paper towels on a cutting board. Place something flat and heavy (such as another cutting board; I use my cast iron pan) on top. Allow to sit for 5 to 10 minutes. You want to get out as much moisture as you can. Dry tofu = crispy tofu
  2. Cube up the tofu and then toss lightly in flour
  3. Heat up the coconut oil in a large wok over medium heat
  4. Add tofu to the pan and cook. You want the tofu to turn golden brown
  5. Turn the heat down a little and add onions. Cook until soft and starting to go translucent
  6. Add the garlic on top of the onions in a pile and allow it to “steam” for 30 seconds or so. This will bring out a sweeter flavor in the garlic
  7. Add the string beans, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, molasses/honey, water, salt, and pepper
  8. Stir and allow to cook until string beans are cooked but still have a little bite
  9. Serve over steamed rice with a sprinkle of sesame seeds
