The loss of consideration
There are times when people really piss me off. Not that I’m perfect, a model person, or anything like that, but one thing I pride myself on is that I try to see how my actions will affect others before I do things. I’m not into the “Political Correctness” crap, but I simply try to have basic consideration for people around me.
So when I see others just totally ignore that concept, I don’t get it. I’m not saying that people should be like me and have my outlook, but shit, at least act like there are other people around that might not appreciate your actions.
I live in a mostly quiet neighborhood, and occasionally, people have parties. No big deal. But when the parties last all day and into the early morning hours and involve loud music, I get irritated. I’m not against music, loud, quiet or otherwise. I love music. But when it’s 2am and I’m dead tired and music is blaring from 2 blocks away and keeping me up, I have a problem with it.
Early July is obviously fireworks season. Again, there’s a time and place for it. A solid 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after the 4th, shooting them off until 3am, is absolute stupidity. Again, no freakin’ consideration of others, yet one set of neighbors seems to think that its perfectly fine to stay up all night, making noise and keep everyone else up with them for a month straight.
Should people stop having fun because it’s annoying to me? No, but I think it’s safe to say that I wasn’t the only one pissed off. It seems more and more than too many people have the “It’s all about me” attitude, and screw what anyone else thinks.
Am I wrong? Are people becoming too self focused to think of others, or is consideration something most people practice?

Yeah, I know what you mean. This time of year you kind of have to expect it, but every week would be annoying, especially if it was the same neighbours.
I’m sure if you’re annoyed … lots of other neighbours are too!!
nope. people don’t care anymore who they disturb. some one in a car last night had their radio blasting, it was almost 12, but they were more concerned about how great their music sounded - not about those who maybe sleeping.
we live in a look at me world right now and being considerate of others is becoming less and less of a practice.
Wow! I thought it was just me who had it bad with noise and inconsiderate neighbors. I’ve lived in rental properties exclusively since graduating college over 16 years ago and have had some really bad experiences. In rentals I know it is a lack of respect and concern for others because people know they won’t live there long and can abuse their privileges. It is sad.
There has been an erosion of overall civility. It seems we operate in a realm of sans politesse.
Try holding a door for someone and see how many people say “thank you.” How many people let you pass in a tight spot on the road? As for disruptions in quiet suburbs, how about wannabe Harley guy and his WWI German helmet ripping through the streets with that loud engine at 3am.
Then again, I think common civility goes in circles. Juvenal used to talk about the lack of it way back during Roman times. Victorian England brought some of those courtesy and etiquette thing back - largely based on Renaissance Humanists. The 1950s in North America seemed to be a time of general overall respect. God Bless Happy Days, Richie and The Fonz.
Today, wow. Self-entitlement, searching for a unique existence, cynicism etc. all conspire to create conditions not right for the common good. A type of Social Darwinism prevails. No one should be surprised that conspiracy theories are the norm now. We’re like an adolescent refusing to not only grow up but accept any responsibility for any of our actions.
It’s all part of this “loss of consideration” which manifests itself on so many social and political levels.
Then again, what do I know? I just told my gal to “Sit on it.”
Hello…hello
It is the downfall of man/woman-kind and there is no definite play on words there:)
Seriously…if you think it is going to get better with all of man’s/woman’s speedy advances in technology…think again.
We have the new-age of text-children. They live for texting their so called acquaintances. They do not make eye contact anymore…they are becoming more and more anti-personal with every text message ect.
Yes some adults do text….but we are basically set in stone with our personalities and have formed real people friendships before the attack of advancement through technology.
So if you think that there are a lot of uncaring, personally detached people out there with absolutely no idea what ‘bed side manners’ are….it is only going to become more and more robotish(if thats even a word)
Kids that are skateboarding in our local malls parking lots or anywhere they can grab some concrete….now look at on coming cars or others as being in THEIR way. They do not move….they do however stare you down as if to say…WHAT???
I have noticed the ignorance and just plain lack of civility more and more every day also.
It has become a very sad world to live in.
So what do WE do?
We see it…we bitch about it…we even allow it to frustrate us…but what are we doing about it?
OR better yet….can we do anything about it?
My jury is still out on that one!!
Great blog topic…it’s real and it matters!!!

I agree, people nowadays can be really incondsiderate and selfish. I notice it a lot travelling to and from work on the trains, with people pushing past you, hogging seats, playing loud music or talking really loudly… A lot of seems to be a lack of common sense and just not caring about the people around you. It is frustrating!
